The Bloodborne PSX demake, a fan-made project, is the latest to face a copyright claim from Sony Interactive Entertainment, following last week's takedown of the Bloodborne 60fps mod. Lance McDonald, creator of the 60fps mod, confirmed receiving a takedown notice from Sony, prompting the removal of online links to his patch, four years after its release. Lilith Walther, creator of the Bloodborne PSX demake and Nightmare Kart (formerly Bloodborne Kart), reported a copyright claim by MarkScan Enforcement on a YouTube video showcasing the demake. McDonald revealed MarkScan is a company employed by Sony, responsible for both DMCA takedowns.
This action has fueled speculation, particularly given the recent advancements in PS4 emulation, which allows for a near-remaster experience of Bloodborne at 60fps, as highlighted by Digital Foundry. This breakthrough in emulation, offering a fully playable 60fps version, may have triggered Sony's aggressive response. Sony has yet to comment.
McDonald posited a theory—that Sony’s actions are preemptive, aiming to clear the search results for "Bloodborne 60fps" and "Bloodborne remake" before announcing an official release, potentially a 60fps remake. This would prevent fan projects from overshadowing an official product.
Despite these actions, Sony hasn't indicated any plans to revive Bloodborne. Shuhei Yoshida, a former PlayStation executive, offered his perspective, suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki’s strong personal attachment to Bloodborne and his busy schedule prevent him from overseeing a remaster or sequel, and Sony respects his wishes.
Bloodborne remains unreleased on modern hardware nearly a decade after its initial launch. While Miyazaki often deflects questions regarding Bloodborne, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he acknowledged in February 2023 that a release on modern hardware would benefit the game.
