Bethesda initially envisioned a more visceral experience for Starfield, incorporating gore and dismemberment mechanics. However, technical limitations forced the studio to cut these features. Former character artist Dennis Mejillones, who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that the complexity of integrating these mechanics with the game's space suits proved insurmountable. The intricate details—from helmet removal to managing flesh and suit interactions—created a massive technical challenge. The evolving character creator and customizable body sizes further complicated the process, leading to what Mejillones described as a "big rat's nest" of technical issues.

While some fans expressed disappointment over the absence of gore and dismemberment, a feature present in Fallout 4, Mejillones argued that such mechanics are more fitting for the tongue-in-cheek humor of the Fallout universe. He noted that it's "part of the fun" within that franchise's context.

Despite this omission, Starfield, Bethesda's first full single-player RPG in eight years, launched to significant success, attracting over 15 million players since its September 2023 release. IGN's 7/10 review highlighted the game's expansive RPG quests and satisfying combat as key strengths.

The game's launch wasn't without its challenges. A former Bethesda developer recently expressed surprise at the number of loading screens, particularly in Neon. Since launch, Bethesda has implemented improvements, including a 60fps performance mode, and released the Shattered Space expansion in September.
