After 25 years, the origin story behind the name "Super Smash Bros." is finally revealed, courtesy of its creator, Masahiro Sakurai.
In a recent YouTube video, Sakurai explained that the name reflects the game's core concept: friends playfully resolving minor conflicts. He credits the late Satoru Iwata, former Nintendo president, with a crucial role in choosing the name.
Sakurai recounts brainstorming sessions with team members and Shigesato Itoi (creator of the Mother/Earthbound series) to finalize the title. He reveals that Iwata selected the "brothers" element, explaining that while the characters weren't literally brothers, the term conveyed a sense of friendly rivalry—a playful squabble rather than a bitter feud.
Beyond the naming anecdote, Sakurai shares heartwarming memories of his collaboration with Iwata, including Iwata's direct involvement in programming the prototype, then titled Dragon King: The Fighting Game, for the Nintendo 64.
