11 bit Studios has unveiled an exciting new chapter in the Frostpunk series with the announcement of Frostpunk 1886, a remake of the original game. This highly anticipated reveal came via a Twitter (X) post on April 24, where the studio shared their plans to leverage the power of the Unreal Engine for this project.
In a surprising twist, 11 bit Studios is not moving forward with a new title but instead revisiting their roots by remaking the first Frostpunk game. This decision stems from their experience with Frostpunk 2, which was built using Unreal Engine 5. The developers recognized the untapped potential that the Unreal Engine could bring to the original Frostpunk, leading to the creation of Frostpunk 1886.
The game promises to include a brand-new Purpose Path, long-awaited mod support, and other enhancements, all while preserving the essence of the original. In a detailed Steam post on the same day, 11 bit Studios outlined their vision to not only improve the visuals and resolution but also to explore the full spectrum of possibilities that the Unreal Engine offers.
Currently in development, Frostpunk 1886 is slated for a 2027 release. The developers are dedicated to crafting an experience that will serve as an excellent entry point for new players into the Frostpunk universe, while also satisfying the cravings of long-time fans for a game they'll want to play repeatedly.
Looking ahead, the studio teased the possibility of new content through future DLCs. They aim to shorten the gap between their releases, starting with Frostpunk 1886. While fans await this new installment, they can dive into Frostpunk 2, which is already available on PC and will soon launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S this summer. Additionally, a free major update for Frostpunk 2 is set to drop on May 8, adding more to the game's roadmap.
