The former Witcher 3 director has unveiled that the protagonist of The Blood of Dawnwalker lives two distinct lives, gaining enhanced abilities at night due to his vampiric heritage. Discover how this innovative game mechanic works!

Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, former Witcher 3 director and founder of Rebel Wolves, shared that their team has integrated a novel game mechanic inspired by popular culture but never before implemented in video games. Rebel Wolves, a newly formed game development studio behind The Blood of Dawnwalker, includes several former members of The Witcher 3 team.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Tomaszkiewicz emphasized the importance of creating a game that avoids the typical superhero clichés found in Marvel films and similar franchises. "Crafting such narratives is challenging because the character simply grows more and more powerful," Tomaszkiewicz noted. "I sought a hero concept that felt grounded—someone who must tackle challenges in unconventional ways. At the same time, I wanted to offer players a kind of superhero experience."

To address this, Tomaszkiewicz designed a protagonist who authentically embodies a half-human, half-vampire existence. As a result, Coen will experience all the vulnerabilities of a human during the day, while unlocking new abilities and supernatural powers after dark.
"The duality of the hero, reminiscent of figures like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, is fascinating. This concept is well-known in pop culture but remains unexplored in gaming," Tomaszkiewicz explained. "It adds a fresh dimension to the unreal, and I believe it will captivate players since no one has attempted it before. We're excited to see how audiences respond."
This innovative mechanic introduces both new opportunities and limitations for players. Engaging enemies at night may prove more advantageous than during the day, particularly against non-vampire foes. Additionally, players will need to rely on their wits when tackling quests in daylight, as their vampiric abilities are unavailable.

Daniel Sadowski, former design director of The Witcher 3, also revealed in a January 16, 2025, interview with PC Gamer that The Blood of Dawnwalker will incorporate a "time as a resource" system.
This new feature significantly limits players' ability to complete every quest by linking progression to an in-game time system. "It will inevitably require players to make choices—deciding what to pursue and what to skip—to optimize their chances of defeating the main antagonist," Sadowski stated. "However, players will have multiple approaches to address challenges, all of which tie back into the narrative sandbox."

With this system, players must thoughtfully select their next quest by considering its potential impact on future missions or character relationships. Although restrictive, Sadowski believes that "knowing your time is limited can help clarify your actions and motivations, shaping your unique version of the protagonist, Coen."
Together, these two mechanics ensure that every choice—and every omission—can influence the game's narrative, making each decision more consequential than ever.
