Original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion senior game designer Bruce Nesmith remarked that Bethesda and Virtuos' Oblivion Remastered is so impressive, he's not sure calling it a remaster "trully captures its scale."

The mastermind behind many elements that made the original 2006 RPG so memorable shared his thoughts on the newly announced—and released—Oblivion remaster in a recent talk with VideoGamer. He reflected on the "blood, sweat, and tears" poured into bringing every corner of Cyrodiil to life, which is why seeing Oblivion reimagined so comprehensively has been such a surprise.

"I assumed this would just be a texture update," Nesmith said. "I didn't expect it to be the complete overhaul they've announced... That would have been unsurprising. But to entirely redo the animations, the animation system, implement Unreal Engine, change the leveling system, and revamp the user interface—that's touching every part of the game."

Bethesda did not officially mention Oblivion Remastered prior to its surprise launch yesterday. Nonetheless, long-time fans have been largely impressed by the countless changes, ranging from surface-level visual enhancements to foundational gameplay adjustments. Additions like a new sprint mechanic and changes to the leveling system have led many to consider Oblivion Remastered less a remaster and more of a remake, a sentiment Nesmith shares.

The closest that could come [to categorising it] is Oblivion 2.0.“

"That's a staggering amount of revision," he added. "It almost needs its own term, honestly. I'm not sure 'remaster' truly does it justice."

Elsewhere in the conversation, he tried to define what he's seen of Oblivion Remastered so far: "The closest description might be Oblivion 2.0."

As fans gather to appreciate the work invested into Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda has offered its own explanation for naming its RPG re-release. In a social media statement posted yesterday, the studio clarified that it "never intended to remake" Oblivion. Instead, the goal was to preserve the experience players know and love while modernizing it for newcomers, flaws and all.

"We know many of our long-time fans will be thrilled to return to Oblivion and Cyrodiil," Bethesda's statement continued. "But there are also many who have never played it. We can't thank you enough for all the support over the years. Our hope with this remaster is that, whether you're a returning veteran or a first-time player, stepping out of the Imperial sewer feels like a brand-new experience."
