Sega's Risk-Taking Approach Fuels RGG Studio's Ambitious Projects
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) attributes its ability to juggle multiple large-scale projects simultaneously to Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation. This forward-thinking approach has led to the announcement of two exciting new titles, in addition to the studio's already packed schedule. Let's delve into the details.
RGG Studio, currently developing a new IP alongside the next Like a Dragon installment and a Virtua Fighter remake (all slated for 2025), recently unveiled two additional projects: Project Century (set in 1915 Japan) and a new Virtua Fighter project (distinct from the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. remaster). These ambitious undertakings highlight the studio's drive and Sega's unwavering support. Sega's confidence stems from a blend of trust in RGG Studio and a commitment to exploring uncharted territories.
According to Masayoshi Yokoyama, head and director of RGG Studio, Sega's acceptance of potential failure is a key factor: "Sega accepts the possibility of failure. It doesn’t just keep pursuing safe bets," he stated in an interview with Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media. This risk-taking philosophy, Yokoyama suggests, is ingrained in Sega's DNA, citing the evolution from the Virtua Fighter IP to the RPG-infused Shenmue series as a prime example.
RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of these projects won't compromise quality, especially regarding the Virtua Fighter franchise. With the original creator, Yu Suzuki, expressing his support, and the team's commitment to avoid anything "half-baked," expectations are high.
Riichiro Yamada, producer of the new Virtua Fighter project, adds, "With the new ‘VF,’ we intend to create something innovative that a wide range of people will find ‘cool and interesting!’ Whether you're a fan of the series or not, we hope you'll look forward to more information. Stay tuned!" Yokoyama echoes this sentiment, expressing his eagerness for gamers to experience both upcoming titles.
