Monster Hunter Wilds: A Deep Dive into the Starting Equipment

Many Monster Hunter players cite crafting new equipment from hard-earned hunt materials as a major draw. The satisfaction of a complete armor set and matching weapon, painstakingly acquired, is a familiar feeling. This equipment crafting system, central to the series since its inception, hinges on a core concept: harnessing the power of slain monsters through crafted gear. Players conquer powerful beasts, then integrate their abilities to enhance their own strength.

In an IGN interview, Kaname Fujioka, Executive Director and Art Director of Monster Hunter Wilds, shed light on this design philosophy. While the design range has expanded, the team previously prioritized a direct visual connection between monster and equipment. "If you're wearing Rathalos' equipment, you'll look like Rathalos," Fujioka explained. Wilds introduces new monsters and their unique, colorful equipment. Rompopolo, a mad scientist-inspired monster, for instance, boasts head armor resembling a plague doctor's mask (see the hunt video below).

However, the developers emphasize the importance of the initial hunter equipment. Fujioka designed all 14 starting weapon types from scratch – a first for him. He explains that unlike previous games where starting weapons were rudimentary, the chosen hunter protagonist in Wilds deserved more impressive starting gear. "I wanted to make it feel like you're a bit of a star, even when you're only carrying starting equipment."

Yuya Tokuda, Director of Monster Hunter Wilds, adds that while Monster Hunter: World weapons retained a base form with customizable appearances based on materials, Wilds features uniquely designed weapons for each type. This aligns with the narrative of an experienced hunter investigating the Forbidden Lands. The starting armor, the "Hope" series, also reflects this narrative focus.

The Hope set, a deep emerald green ensemble forming a hooded long coat when complete, presented unique design challenges. Fujioka highlights the complexity of creating a cohesive set where each piece works independently and together. "We've actually given more attention to the Hope series than any other equipment in this game," he states. Previous limitations in depicting armor pieces as a unified whole are overcome in Wilds through significant resource investment. While encouraging exploration of diverse equipment throughout the game, the developers aimed for the Hope series to possess a subtle yet stylish elegance.

Starting with such meticulously crafted equipment is a notable luxury. The 14 starting weapons and the Hope armor set are designed to project the image of a seasoned, elite hunter. The level of detail promises a captivating in-game experience.
