Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A Historic Move for the EWC 2025
The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament has made a groundbreaking announcement: chess, a game with millennia of history, is officially joining the esports lineup. This collaboration between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) marks a pivotal moment, bringing the strategic game to a wider, global audience.
EWCF CEO, Ralf Reichert, expressed his excitement, referring to chess as "the mother of all strategy games." He highlighted chess's global appeal and competitive spirit as a perfect fit for the EWC's mission to unite diverse gaming communities. World champion and top-ranked player, Magnus Carlsen, will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a new generation of players. Carlsen stated his enthusiasm for this partnership, viewing it as a significant opportunity to expand the game's reach and inspire future chess players.
The EWC 2025, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, will feature a substantial $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be determined through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four "Last Chance Qualifier" winners, will compete for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC, marking chess's inaugural esports appearance.
To enhance the appeal for esports fans, the 2025 CCT will utilize a faster, more dynamic format. Matches will feature a 10-minute time control with no increment, and tiebreakers will be decided by a single Armageddon game.
Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has evolved and captivated players across generations. Its digital adaptation, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, has broadened its accessibility, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game's popularity has also been boosted by media exposure through streaming, influencers, and shows like "The Queen's Gambit." Its official recognition as an esport promises to attract even more players and enthusiasts to this timeless game.
