Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Addressing a Turbulent Launch
The highly anticipated release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a rocky start, with widespread reports of bugs, instability, and server overload. Jorg Neumann, head of MSFS, and Asobo Studio CEO Sebastian Wloch, addressed these issues in a YouTube video.
Server Overload and Database Issues
Neumann and Wloch explained that the unexpectedly high number of players overwhelmed the game's servers and database. While the database's cache was tested with 200,000 simulated users, the actual player count far exceeded expectations, causing significant strain on the system. The initial login process, requiring data retrieval from the server and database, became severely bottlenecked.
Login Queues and Missing Content
Attempts to mitigate the problem by increasing queue capacity and speed proved temporary. The database cache repeatedly collapsed under the load, resulting in extended loading times and the infamous "97% loading screen freeze." Wloch attributed this to the server repeatedly restarting and retrying data retrieval, creating significant delays. Furthermore, the reported missing planes and other content stemmed from this server overload and incomplete data delivery.
Negative Steam Feedback and Ongoing Efforts
The launch issues resulted in a wave of negative Steam reviews, citing long login queues and missing game assets. Despite the overwhelmingly negative initial reception, the development team has been actively working on solutions. The Steam page now reports that the major issues have been addressed, and players are now being admitted at a more manageable rate. A sincere apology was issued, along with assurances of continued updates and communication with the community.
