MultiVersus is set to shut down when Season 5 concludes in May, yet the profound changes to combat speed introduced in a new update have fans enjoying its gameplay more than ever—even sparking a #SaveMultiVersus trend on social media.

The community for Warner Bros.' platform fighter was ready to dive into its fifth and final season when it launched on February 4 at 9 a.m. PT. Developer Player First Games had detailed plans to end the project last week, hinting that the update would feature DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny as the final playable characters. What seemed like a somber farewell for MultiVersus instead brought sweeping movement changes across the roster, resulting in a significantly faster-paced experience. This is a fundamental adjustment players have requested for years, arriving just as the game reaches its conclusion.

Players first noticed the sped-up combat after Player First shared a Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video on X/Twitter. For past players of the free-to-play Warner Bros. fighter, the differences are unmistakable; characters now chain combos and traverse the screen faster than ever. It's a dramatic departure from the floaty gameplay criticized during the MultiVersus beta test in 2022, and it’s even quicker than the game's relaunch last May.

The Season 5 patch notes explain that the increased combat speed stems from reduced hitpause "across most attacks in the game." This means combos execute faster for every character, with several specific fighters receiving additional speed tweaks. Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, Black Adam, and others feel especially agile thanks to changes allowing fast falls during certain aerial attacks. Meanwhile, Garnet now has stronger ringout potential on the ground and weaker in the air, balancing her impact as an already swift character.

Season 5 transforms the nearly year-old fighter into something almost entirely new, offering returning players much more than just two new characters. The catch is that this... is the end. Just as Player First finds its stride with long-awaited gameplay improvements, MultiVersus will shut down completely on May 30. Its closure will halt seasonal content and remove it from digital storefronts as Warner Bros. disables online play, leaving only offline modes available.

Fans are now left in a state of shock, watching MultiVersus evolve into the game they always wanted just as it prepares to vanish. X user @PJiggles_ commented on the changes, calling MultiVersus “the most interesting bad game in existence,” referencing its beta, 2024 relaunch, and sudden speed increase. Professional Super Smash Bros. player Jason Zimmerman (Mew2King) replied to a Player First post to ask why the movement speed wasn't increased sooner.

…but man, if this was how the relaunch started we could’ve really had something.“

“I know everyone's been playing the blame game when there likely isn't a single person or group solely responsible,” one Reddit user stated, “but man, if the relaunch had begun like this, we could’ve had something special. (Apex Legends) has problematic monetization but lasted because it nailed the fundamentals from the start.”

The situation is painful, as the community gathers not only to mourn the game's end but to celebrate its drastic quality leap. Reddit user Desperate_Method4032 said the Season 5 update fixed “every issue I had with the game,” noting that polished shield animations made MultiVersus look and feel far more refined. Though the gameplay overhaul came after the shutdown announcement, they said the game's “potential” fuels hope for a reversal.

“I'm not naïve,” Desperate_Method4032 said. “Just a fan with deep love for these characters. But is it wrong to hold onto a little hope for a comeback? There's too much potential to let it end like this. Not when the game finally feels like it found its footing.”

Unfortunately, while some brace for the worst but hope for the best, Player First and Warner Bros. show no signs of deviating from their summer shutdown plan. MultiVersus game director Tony Huynh shared some closing thoughts on X this week, addressing long-standing player questions. Warner Bros. also disabled real-money transactions as of January 31, leaving players to use only existing in-game currency. The Season 5 premium battle pass is now free for all as a final gift.

MultiVersus will go offline for good at 9 a.m. PT on May 30. As Warner Bros. proceeds with its shutdown, players are finding solace in creating and sharing memes. It's a bittersweet moment for the fighting game community, savoring a game that finally meets expectations just before its demise.
