Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Max will revert to its original name, HBO Max, starting this summer.

The unexpected rebranding reverses the 2022 decision to drop "HBO" from the streaming platform's name. Currently home to hit series like Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, and House of the Dragon, the service will soon be known as HBO Max once again.

WBD revealed the streaming division has improved profitability by nearly $3 billion within two years, while expanding globally with 22 million new subscribers in the past year alone. The company projects surpassing 150 million subscribers by late 2026.

"This turnaround stems from strategic refocusing on successful programming - HBO originals, recent theatrical releases, documentaries, select reality shows, and Max exclusives - while reducing investment in less engaging content categories," explained the company.

The return to HBO Max reflects consumer recognition of the HBO brand's legacy in premium content. In today's crowded streaming market, viewers increasingly seek distinctive, high-value entertainment worth their subscription dollars.

"Modern viewers aren't asking for more content - they're demanding better content," noted WBD. "While competitors focus on quantity, we've differentiated ourselves through quality storytelling, with HBO setting the golden standard for over five decades."

"Reinstating the HBO brand in our streaming service reinforces the premium experience subscribers expect from us. This strategic shift demonstrates our data-driven approach to maintaining industry leadership."

David Zaslav, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, stated: "Our streaming growth stems from exceptional programming. By reinstating HBO, the ultimate media quality benchmark, we're accelerating future expansion."

Streaming CEO JB Perrette added: "We'll continue specializing in distinctive programming for adults and families - not attempting to serve every possible taste, but excelling in our unique creative space."

HBO and Max Content Chairman Casey Bloys concluded: "HBO Max better reflects our current value proposition and reaffirms our commitment to delivering truly exceptional, subscription-worthy entertainment - just as HBO always has."
