Dying Light: The Beast Delay and Microtransactions

Now Arriving September 19

Dying Light: The Beast Delayed For “Extra Polishing Work”

Dying Light: The Beast has been delayed by one month, as developer Techland seeks additional time for "extra polishing work." On July 25, Techland announced via its official website that the upcoming spinoff's release will shift from August 21 to September 19.

Previous reports highlighted the team's focus on a major combat overhaul and creating one of the market's most densely packed open worlds. Despite positive feedback from recent previews, Techland is committed to delivering the best possible Dying Light experience.

An official statement explains, "With just four extra weeks, we can address final details that separate a good game from a great one. Key improvements include fine-tuning gameplay balance, enhancing UI clarity, upgrading physics quality, and polishing cutscenes and player animations, along with adding final touches."

The developers have promised regular progress updates and reminded fans that a playable demo will be showcased at Gamescom 2025, running from August 20-24. Furthermore, new details about the game's brutality and gore will be shared starting next week.

A Shift Toward Linear Storytelling

Dying Light: The Beast will adopt a more linear narrative approach compared to its predecessors. In a July 28 interview with GamesRadar+, Dying Light Director Tymon Smektała discussed the challenges of games with multiple endings, where a sequel often forces one to be canon.

Smektala stated, "If you offer players a choice, it's unfair to later dictate which outcome is official canon. Granting choice means accepting that each player's personal canon will differ."

He emphasized that future titles will pursue a more linear story structure, allowing the developers to convey their intended narrative more precisely. Smektala clarified, "We want greater control over the direction of each new Dying Light game, especially given our extensive future plans. This ensures the story drives toward our desired destination."

No Virtual Currencies Planned

Beyond gameplay and story, fans have expressed concerns about the potential inclusion of virtual currencies. This stems from the controversy surrounding "DL Points," introduced for Dying Light 2 in 2023, 18 months post-launch.

Techland described DL Points as "a straightforward way to purchase bundles without leaving the game." However, the community criticized the system for obscuring real-world costs with a proprietary currency. Since DL Points were only sold in set bundles, players were often left with unusable leftover balances.

As reported by PCGamesN in September 2023, Dying Light 2 was review-bombed on Steam, shifting its rating from "Mostly Positive" to "Mixed." Techland responded on September 9, 2023, via Twitter, and later patched the game to offer items purchasable with leftover points. Yet, player frustration persisted.

Notably, Tencent acquired a majority stake in Techland around the time DL Points launched, leading many to attribute the controversial monetization to this influence. Tencent is known for aggressive monetization in titles like Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile.

For the upcoming release, players questioned whether DL Points or any virtual currency would return. When one fan asked Smektala to avoid microtransactions in Dying Light: The Beast, he simply replied, "Not planned."

Techland appears to be listening to its community, prioritizing player experience—a factor that contributed to the delay. Dying Light: The Beast is scheduled for release on September 19, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
