Conquer the Legendary Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The Battle of Hulao Gate, a pivotal moment in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, presents a significant challenge. This guide will help you overcome this difficult stage in Chapter 2, your objective being the defeat of Dong Zhuo.

Initial Strategy:

Begin by capturing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right corner. Conquering two triggers a cutscene introducing mounted cavalry. Continue your base capture; defeating Zhang Liao, the cavalry commander, rewards you with a twin pike weapon. Once all bases are secured, assault Hulao Gate.

The First Encounter with Dong Zhuo's Forces:

This initial battle is chaotic. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he initiates his Grand Tactic. This weakens the defenses, allowing you to advance towards Hulao Gate.

Lu Bu's Arrival:

Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu. Avoid direct confrontation. A one-on-one fight is suicidal. Instead, eliminate enemy officers around Lu Bu to maintain morale, which his presence significantly drains. Lu Bu will eventually attack your main base (Yuan Shao). Resist the urge to pursue him; Liu Bei's forces will defend, buying you time to defeat Dong Zhuo. This creates a time limit; if Liu Bei's forces are routed, Lu Bu will defeat Yuan Shao, ending the mission.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

Once Lu Bu leaves, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Then, capture the northern and western bases. With all three squads prepared, and fully healed, charge towards Dong Zhuo.

Dong Zhuo's Grand Tactics:

Dong Zhuo will unleash two Grand Tactics involving fireballs. The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage (if available) to break through the soldier barricade protecting them. The second tactic requires defeating an officer; you may encounter Diaochan, a formidable opponent. A duel with Diaochan is recommended to avoid being overwhelmed.

After thwarting the Grand Tactics, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should easily defeat his remaining army. Dian Wei might even initiate a Grand Tactic, further simplifying the final confrontation with Dong Zhuo. While a duel is tempting, a standard attack is sufficient at this point.
