Prime Video has halted production on "The Wheel of Time," canceling the series after its third season.

According to Deadline, Prime Video chose not to renew the fantasy epic for a fourth season following extended internal discussions. While executives reportedly appreciated the show, they concluded it was not financially viable to continue.

Based on Robert Jordan's beloved book series and starring Rosamund Pike, the adaptation initially faced criticism from fans over significant deviations from the source material in its first two seasons. However, Season 3 successfully won back much of the fanbase and appeared poised for a stronger future.

The cancellation is a major blow to fans, as a substantial portion of the saga's story remains untold. In many ways, the series was only just hitting its stride.

The primary issue appears to be budget. The high costs proved prohibitive for co-producers Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios—the latter of which also finances the massively expensive "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."

As Deadline reported:

...the overall performance of Season 3 did not justify the series' substantial production budget. Despite exploring various options and negotiating with lead studio Sony TV, Prime Video could not find a sustainable path forward for another season.

IGN's review of Season 3 awarded it an 8/10, stating: "The Wheel of Time finally realizes its full potential this season, delivering rich character development within Robert Jordan’s intricately crafted fantasy universe."

Although the television series has ended, a "AAA open-world RPG" set in the same world is currently in development. IGN recently spoke with iwot Studios, the rights holder, to learn more about the upcoming game.
