Sony is reportedly exploring a return to the handheld gaming console market, according to recent reports. This news, originating from Bloomberg (via Gamedeveloper), suggests Sony is in the early stages of developing a portable console to rival Nintendo's Switch.
Long-time gaming enthusiasts will recall Sony's previous forays into the portable market with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita (Vita). While this new project is still in its infancy, and its release isn't guaranteed, the potential for success appears promising. Bloomberg itself acknowledges the possibility that Sony might ultimately decide against launching the console.
The decline of dedicated portable gaming consoles, aside from Nintendo's continued success with the Switch, is partly due to the rise of mobile gaming. Despite the Vita's popularity, Sony and other manufacturers seemingly concluded that competing with smartphones was impractical.
However, the landscape has shifted. The recent success of the Steam Deck and other handheld devices, coupled with advancements in mobile technology, suggests a renewed opportunity for dedicated portable consoles. The increased power and capabilities of modern mobile devices may actually encourage companies like Sony to believe a market exists for a higher-fidelity portable gaming experience.
