Sonic Galactic, a fan-made game from Starteam, evokes the spirit and gameplay of the beloved Sonic Mania. This labor of love, four years in the making, debuted at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo. It's a nostalgic trip back to classic 2D Sonic platforming, capturing the feel of a hypothetical 32-bit era release, perhaps even imagining a Sega Saturn Sonic title.
The game's appeal lies in its pixel art aesthetic and faithful recreation of classic Sonic gameplay, a style that remains popular despite the release of more modern titles like Sonic Superstars. The lack of a true Sonic Mania sequel, due to Sonic Team's shift away from pixel art and the developers' other commitments, left a void that Sonic Galactic aims to fill. Other fan projects, such as Sonic and the Fallen Star, have similarly tapped into the enduring charm of this art style.
New Characters and Expanded Gameplay
Sonic Galactic's second demo (early 2025) expands the playable roster beyond the iconic Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) joins the fight against Dr. Eggman, adding a unique perspective to the adventure. A brand-new character, Tunnel the Mole, hailing from Illusion Island, further diversifies the gameplay experience.
Each character boasts unique paths through the game's zones, mirroring the design choices of Sonic Mania. The special stages, too, are clearly inspired by Mania, presenting players with time-limited 3D ring-collecting challenges. While a standard playthrough focusing on Sonic's stages takes about an hour, the inclusion of additional characters and their respective levels extends the overall playtime to a couple of hours.
