In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal choice: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This decision, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, profoundly impacts the game's outcome.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Decision

Updated February 29, 2024: This choice comes after defeating Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate. The consequences are significant, potentially leading to companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) may be needed to influence companion reactions.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.

Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?

This decision hinges on player priorities. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

After the Netherbrain encounter, within the Astral Prism, the choice presents itself: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Emperor's Path: Choosing the Emperor leads to Orpheus' demise as his knowledge is absorbed. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While ensuring victory over the Netherbrain, this path might alienate fans of these companions.

Freeing Orpheus: This choice results in the Emperor allying with the Netherbrain. The risk of party members becoming Mind Flayers remains. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. Interestingly, he's willing to sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.

In short: Choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation; choose Orpheus to risk it but gain his aid. The Emperor's choice may lead to Lae'zel's betrayal and Karlach's return to Avernus.

Moral Considerations:

The "moral" choice depends on individual perspectives, but loyalty is key. Orpheus, as a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's directives might seem overly demanding to others. The Gith prioritize self-preservation above all else.

The Emperor, conversely, strives to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts the possibility of sacrifice for victory. Following his plan might lead to Mind Flayer transformation, yet it remains a morally sound path for some.

BG3 offers multiple endings. Strategic choices can lead to outcomes beneficial to all involved.
