Before you can engage with the hermit, a visit to the villagers in Troskowitz is necessary.

Begin your journey at the tavern in Troskowitz, where you should speak with Innkeeper Betty and explore all available dialogue options. Don't hesitate to chat with other villagers as well; in my playthrough, conversations with the alehouse maid and the general trader proved insightful.

Make your way to the hermit's hut and initiate a conversation with him. Without the evidence, he won't be forthcoming, but now, equipped with your findings, he'll be more open.

• "Out with it!"

The hermit, who reveals his true identity as Konrad, not Ambrose, will task you with visiting a widow named Margaret and delivering a cross to her.

Find Margaret at the cemetery near Apollonia and hand over the cross. This action triggers the Sinful Soul quest, which you can complete immediately by assisting her in digging a grave for Ambrose. This step is optional, and you can choose to return to Konrad directly if you prefer.

Help Konrad or Kill Him

Upon returning to the hermit's hut, you'll encounter a group of Crusaders. You'll have the choice to either assist them in eliminating Konrad or help Konrad escape.

Approach the hut stealthily, and Konrad will agree to talk. Confirm you've completed the task and inquire about the sword's location. At this juncture, decide whether to aid Konrad or kill him. In my experience, killing Konrad was the easier option, especially with Mutt and the Crusaders by your side.
