Black Ops 6's TMNT Crossover Sparks Player Outrage Over Pricing
Activision's latest Black Ops 6 crossover event, featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) as part of Season 2 Reloaded, has ignited a firestorm of criticism from players due to its exorbitant pricing.
The individual TMNT character skins (Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello) are priced at $20 each, while Master Splinter costs $10 as part of the premium Battle Pass. This brings the total cost to a staggering $100, excluding a separate $10 TMNT-themed weapon blueprint. This pricing model has particularly angered players given that Black Ops 6 is a full-priced game ($69.99), adding insult to injury with the added cost of cosmetic items. Comparisons to free-to-play titles like Fortnite, where similar bundles are significantly cheaper, have fueled the backlash. One Reddit user, neverclaimsurv, succinctly summarized the sentiment: "That is INSANE...In Fortnite I think I paid $25.00 for all 4 turtles, and that’s a free game."
Adding fuel to the fire is the likelihood that these purchased skins will not carry over to future Black Ops installments. The perceived short-term value of these expensive cosmetics is further diminishing player enthusiasm. Reddit user SellMeYourSirin highlighted this concern, stating, "It has everything to do with the fact a full price game (that’s likely gonna be replaced within the next year) has THREE tiers of battle passes."
Despite the negative reaction, Black Ops 6's high revenue generation continues, largely driven by its costly battle passes. However, the overwhelmingly negative Steam reviews (currently Mixed, with only 47% recommending the game) reflect a growing discontent within the player base. Beyond the pricing issues, players cite numerous other problems, including game-crashing bugs, rampant hacking in multiplayer, and concerns over Activision's increased reliance on AI.
Steam user LemonRain's review encapsulates the frustration: "this game has had problems with hard crashing since launch, but the latest update has made it so I can’t complete a single match. Reinstalling. Safe mode. Support. Nothing works and I have given up." Other players report frequent encounters with hackers capable of instantly eliminating opponents. Furthermore, some players are even using AI-generated reviews as a form of protest against Activision's increasing use of AI in game development. Steam user Rundur's review exemplifies this: "Since Activision can't be bothered hiring real people anymore, I've decided to take advantage of AI myself and ask ChatGPT to write this negative review for me. Enjoy."
While Activision's revenue stream remains strong, the sustained negative feedback suggests that the company may need to reconsider its monetization strategies to avoid further alienating its player base.
