A Cult Classic Begging for a Modern Revival

Bloodborne, the critically acclaimed RPG released in 2015, has captivated players with its gothic city of Yharnam. The demand for a modern console version has been persistent, and recent Instagram posts from FromSoftware and PlayStation Italia have reignited hopes for a revival.

On August 24, FromSoftware shared three images tagged with "#bloodborne." One image showcased Djura, a veteran hunter from Old Yharnam, while the others depicted the player Hunter navigating the heart of Yharnam and the eerie graveyards of Charnel Lane. Although these posts might simply be a nostalgic nod, Bloodborne enthusiasts on social media platforms like Twitter (X) are meticulously analyzing them for any hints of a remaster. The excitement is further amplified by a similar post from PlayStation Italia on August 17.

PlayStation Italia's post, translated, reads: "Swipe to see some of Bloodborne’s most iconic locations! A journey through gothic atmospheres and dark mysteries. Which is your favorite?" The comments under the post are filled with fans expressing their desire to return to Yharnam, with some humorously suggesting that the most iconic location would be on PC or modern consoles.

Almost a Decade Later, the Hunt for Bloodborne on Modern Consoles Continues

Originally launched exclusively on the PS4 in 2015, Bloodborne has garnered a dedicated following and is often cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. Despite its acclaim, the game has yet to see a sequel or remaster.

Fans often reference the 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls, which was released over a decade after its initial launch, as a potential model for a Bloodborne revival. However, the anticipation is mixed with apprehension about a prolonged wait. As Bloodborne approaches its tenth anniversary, the clamor for a remastered version grows louder.

In a February interview with Eurogamer, Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki hinted at the advantages of remastering the game for modern hardware. "I think having new hardware is definitely a part of what gives these remakes value," Miyazaki stated. "However, I wouldn’t say that’s the be all and end all. I think purely from a user perspective, modern hardware also allows more players to appreciate all the games. And so, it ends up being a simple reason, but as a fellow player, I think that accessibility is important."

While Miyazaki's comments are encouraging, the final decision rests with Sony, who owns the Bloodborne IP. In another interview with IGN, Miyazaki clarified, "Unfortunately, and I’ve said this in other interviews, it’s not in my place to talk about Bloodborne specifically. We simply don’t own the IP at FromSoftware. For me personally, it was a great project, and I have a lot of great memories for that game, but we’re not at liberty to speak to it."

Bloodborne's fervent fanbase continues to hope for a remake. Despite its critical and commercial success, the game remains confined to the PlayStation 4. Only time will tell if the current speculation about a Bloodborne remaster will materialize into a reality.
