Sony has indicated it may implement price increases to counter the significant financial impact of tariffs on its operations.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment giant released its fiscal year 2025 financial results, with executives addressing the ramifications of U.S. trade policies during an investor Q&A. Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao revealed that imposed tariffs could cost Sony approximately ¥100 billion ($685 million) if current trade policies persist. This substantial financial burden stems from Sony's extensive hardware manufacturing operations, including PlayStation 5 console production.

Tao suggested Sony may partially offset these costs through hardware price adjustments, which could include potential increases for the PS5. "We're not simply calculating the direct tariff impact to reach ¥100 billion," he explained, as translated during the investor webcast. "Beyond evaluating market conditions, we may pass some costs to consumers through pricing adjustments and shipment allocations. We're exploring various mitigation strategies to address this financial impact."

CEO Hiroki Totoki specifically addressed PlayStation manufacturing strategies, confirming considerations for U.S.-based production to circumvent tariffs. "Localized hardware production would be an efficient solution," he noted. "While PS5 manufacturing currently spans multiple regions, we're evaluating potential U.S. production. This isn't an immediate necessity, but warrants careful consideration moving forward."

Industry analysts speculate Sony may follow recent industry trends toward premium pricing. Niko Partners Research Director Daniel Ahmad observed: "While Sony has implemented regional price increases outside the U.S., both Sony and Microsoft have historically resisted adjusting U.S. pricing due to the market's critical importance for console sales. However, we wouldn't rule out potential PS5 price adjustments in the American market."

Omdia Senior Analyst James McWhirter provided additional context: "With PS5 manufacturing primarily located in China, Sony's supply chain faces heightened exposure to U.S. tariff risks. The console market's seasonal nature—with nearly half of annual sales occurring in Q4—has allowed manufacturers to temporarily rely on existing inventories. While consoles received tariff exemptions in 2019, that decision wasn't implemented until August."

"Microsoft's recent pricing moves have created an opening for Sony to reconsider its PS5 pricing strategy," McWhirter continued. "This presents a particularly challenging decision for the U.S. market—the world's largest console marketplace—which avoided major price adjustments until the PS5 Digital Edition's $50 increase in late 2023."
