Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio Fuels AAA Title Anticipation

A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, is generating significant excitement within the gaming community. This confirmation comes via a recent job posting, revealing the studio's development of a high-profile, original AAA IP exclusively for the PS5. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio.

The secrecy surrounding this venture has ignited speculation. Two leading theories propose the studio houses either a Bungie spin-off team or a team assembled around Jason Blundell, a prominent figure formerly associated with Deviation Games.

PlayStation's first-party studios hold considerable industry prestige, making any new project highly anticipated. Recent acquisitions like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite have already broadened PlayStation's development capabilities. This unannounced studio adds another layer to this expanding portfolio.

The Los Angeles-based studio's project is described as "ground-breaking." The revelation emerged from a job listing for a Project Senior Producer, explicitly mentioning the "newly-established AAA studio."

One potential explanation points to a Bungie spin-off team, formed following the July 2024 layoffs at Bungie, where 155 employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team, reportedly working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project, could be the core of the new studio.

Alternatively, the studio might be the culmination of Jason Blundell's efforts. Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer, co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a PS5 AAA title before its closure in March 2024. Significantly, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation under Blundell's leadership in May 2024.

Given the longer timeframe of Blundell's team's formation, it's plausible that the new studio represents his project. While the specifics remain under wraps, speculation suggests a continuation or reimagining of Deviation Games' abandoned AAA title.

While an official announcement from Sony may be years away, the existence of this new studio provides a welcome boost to PlayStation fans, promising yet another first-party title in development.
