The next chapter in the Sonic the Hedgehog saga is slated for a March 2027 release.
Paramount Pictures has officially announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will debut in theaters on March 19th, 2027, as reported by Variety. While the release date is confirmed, further plot details and casting information remain under wraps for now.
This sequel comes as no surprise, considering the phenomenal success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film raked in a remarkable $218 million domestically and over $420 million globally, securing its place as the highest-grossing Sonic film to date, surpassing the impressive $148 million earned by the first installment. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the initial controversy surrounding the original Sonic design, which underwent significant alterations during post-production.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also holds the distinction of being the second highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, reigniting the classic Nintendo vs. Sega rivalry on the big screen.
The live-action Sonic franchise continues to expand, now encompassing three feature films and a Knuckles-centric spin-off streaming series.
Based on the beloved Sega game series, the movies follow Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he confronts his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Each film has progressively introduced more iconic characters from the games, including Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with Sonic 3 finally introducing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves).
While Sonic 3 hinted at the next character joining the franchise, we'll keep that a secret for now. For those brave enough to uncover the mystery, our new character guide awaits. Don't forget to check out our Sonic 3 review as well.
