Legendary Entertainment has chosen Kitao Sakurai, the writer, director, and executive producer behind the comedic series The Eric Andre Show, to helm their new Street Fighter film adaptation, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Capcom is heavily involved in this project, which already has a release date set for March 20, 2026.

This marks another attempt to bring the popular fighting game franchise to the silver screen, following the 1994 adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison – a film now considered a cult classic despite its initial critical reception.

While casting details remain under wraps, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters in action. The project initially saw Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist tone, a direction that appeals to some fans who appreciate the game's more cartoonish aspects.

In the meantime, players can enjoy the latest installment in the franchise, Street Fighter 6, recently enhanced with the addition of Mai Shiranui. Read our full review of Street Fighter 6 here.
