DC Studios co-chief James Gunn recently revealed that the upcoming The Authority film has been placed on the back burner. This surprise announcement comes two years after the project was initially unveiled as part of the DC Universe's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters reboot. The Authority, featuring the notoriously brutal superhero team from the WildStorm Universe, was initially described as a "big movie." However, Gunn cited several challenges as contributing factors to the delay.
He explained that The Authority has proven to be the most difficult project to develop within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, due to evolving storylines and the competitive landscape. The success of Amazon's The Boys, a show that shares thematic similarities and was influenced by The Authority, has presented a significant hurdle. Gunn also mentioned the ongoing development of other DCU projects featuring beloved characters whose stories they want to continue and see intersect. As a result, The Authority is currently on hold.

It's worth noting that Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, a powerful member of The Authority, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman film. For a deeper dive into The Authority and its characters, check out IGN's article, "Who Are the Authority: The WildStorm DCU Characters Explained."
Other Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters projects have also faced setbacks. Gunn mentioned that Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, has experienced delays. However, Booster Gold is progressing well, and Paradise Lost remains a high priority. The pilot script for Paradise Lost is currently being written.
Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is prepared to wait for director James Mangold's availability. Mangold's commitment to other projects, including an upcoming Star Wars film, has caused a delay. However, Gunn and Safran clarified that Swamp Thing is not crucial to the overall narrative of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
