Fields of Mistria: Can You Actually Date the Romance Options?

NPC Studio's Fields of Mistria is celebrated for its well-developed romance options, engaging dialogue, and thoughtfully crafted romance storylines. But can you go on actual dates with these characters?

The short answer is: not yet, technically. However, having invested over 100 hours attempting to win March's affection, I can attest that the existing romance system is incredibly rewarding and well worth the $13.99 Steam price tag.

Fields of Mistria's November 2024 update significantly enhanced the romance system. The maximum relationship level increased from four hearts to six, with each romanceable NPC receiving a new heart event at each milestone. Cutscenes unlock at two, four, and six hearts. Further eight- and ten-heart events are planned for future updates, though no concrete release dates have been announced beyond the upcoming March 2025 update (which will not include increased heart levels or new events).

While the anticipation for expanded romance content is high, the current system is exceptionally strong. The dialogue is rich and realistic, with a satisfyingly flirtatious tone in romantic interactions. Even the early cutscenes, while potentially interpretable as platonic, are cleverly ambiguous, allowing for romantic interpretations based on context. The gradual progression of relationships feels deeply rewarding, even without explicit dating mechanics.

The November update also introduced the Shooting Star Festival, a summer event allowing dates with eligible NPCs (requiring four hearts). Currently, you can share a stargazing evening with Caldarus, although this doesn't trigger a date at the Summit location like other options. This might change with the March 2025 update, which is poised to unlock Caldarus's full romance storyline.

In conclusion, while official dates aren't yet a feature in Fields of Mistria, the existing romance system provides a compelling and engaging experience. The game's strong writing and gradual relationship development more than compensate for the lack of explicit dating sequences, at least for now.
