The story claims that in the original Civilization, a bug transformed the peaceful leader of India into a nuclear-armed warmonger. The Legend Explained

The legend suggests that leaders in the original Civilization had an aggression parameter (1-10 or 1-12). Gandhi, being a pacifist, started at 1. Upon adopting Democracy, his aggression supposedly dropped by 2, resulting in -1. This negative value, according to the myth, caused an 8-bit unsigned integer overflow, boosting his aggression to 255 – making him incredibly aggressive. With nuclear weapons readily available after adopting Democracy, this led to Gandhi unleashing nuclear devastation.

The Legend's Spread

The Nuclear Gandhi story spread rapidly within the Civilization community and beyond. Interestingly, its popularity surged in the mid-2010s, long after the original game's release. Verifying the legend proved difficult due to the game's age and dwindling player base.

Debunking the Myth

Sid Meier himself, the creator of Civilization, declared the Nuclear Gandhi bug "impossible" in 2020. He pointed out two key flaws: integer variables were signed, preventing the overflow; and government types didn't affect aggression levels. Brian Reynolds, lead designer of Civilization II, corroborated this, stating the original game only had three aggression levels.

A Different Kind of Reality

While the original game lacked a Nuclear Gandhi bug, Civilization V introduced a different twist. Gandhi's AI was intentionally coded with a high preference for nuclear weapons, despite his peaceful nature. This likely fueled the existing legend.

The Legacy of Nuclear Gandhi

Even though the original Nuclear Gandhi myth is false, its impact is undeniable. The irony of the peaceful Gandhi becoming a nuclear menace was too compelling to ignore. Civilization VI even acknowledged the legend. With Gandhi absent from Civilization VII, the myth might finally rest.
