Avowed's Character Creation: A Deep Dive into Backgrounds

Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to customize their character's appearance and select a Background, shaping their backstory and influencing the narrative. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Every Background in Avowed Listed

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. While each provides unique dialogue options and a starting weapon (all common-quality, one-handed melee weapons), all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice. The key differentiator lies in the narrative context and roleplaying opportunities.

Arcane Scholar: This scholarly Background grants access to dialogue reflecting academic knowledge and experience. Graduating from Bragganhyl Academy, your character's treatise on soul lineages incurred the wrath of a local lord, leading to arrest but ultimately recruitment into the imperial court archives. Expect dialogue options reflecting expertise in the occult, legal matters, history, and poetry.

Court Augur: This Background presents a tragic narrative. Visions and unusual insights, coupled with a village crop failure, branded your character a witch, forcing a flight to Highcrown and subsequent employment as the emperor's personal mystic. Expect dialogue reflecting spiritual awareness and interactions with magic and the Gods. This Background is ideal for players envisioning a wizard-like character and will likely find synergy with the companion Giatta.

Noble Scion: This Background portrays a character born into noble privilege but marred by family scandal and moral failings. Seeking the emperor's favor, the Noble Scion becomes a valuable ally to the empire. This is a strong choice for players wishing to maintain loyalty to the empire and serve its interests throughout the Living Lands.

Vanguard Scout: This Background depicts a character spared from execution, possessing a humble past and a preference for wilderness over city life and politics. Valuable to the empire for tracking and espionage skills, this Background suits players wanting a hunter-style character and may find a connection with the companion Marius.

War Hero: This Background centers on a character who suppressed a Skaenite uprising, earning a place among elite warriors in the emperor's service. Loyalty and resilience are key traits, making this a fitting choice for players aiming for a warrior-style character and potentially finding common ground with the companion Kai.

Starting Weapons:

An Avowed Starting Weapon

Each Background provides a common-quality, one-handed melee weapon:

  • Arcane Scholar – Dagger
  • Court Augur – Mace
  • Noble Scion – Sword
  • Vanguard Scout – Axe
  • War Hero – Spear

These weapons are found near a shipwreck early in the game's "On Strange Shores" quest and are easily replaceable. Prioritize the Background that best aligns with your desired roleplaying experience.

Avowed is currently available on PC and Xbox.
