According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Warner Bros. has canceled an unannounced paid DLC for the popular game, Hogwarts Legacy. The planned expansion was set to be released this year, alongside a "Definitive Edition" of the game. However, the project was scrapped this week due to concerns that "the amount of content was not substantial enough to justify the price being considered," as per Bloomberg's sources. Warner Bros. declined to comment on the matter.
This decision comes amidst a period of significant restructuring within Warner Bros.' gaming division, driven by ongoing financial challenges. Earlier this year, the company canceled its planned Wonder Woman game and shut down the studio behind it, Monolith Productions. Additionally, WB San Diego and the studio responsible for MultiVersus, Player First Games, were also closed. In a further sign of cost-cutting, Warner Bros. laid off employees at Rocksteady Studios just last September.
Despite these setbacks, Warner Bros. has emphasized that Hogwarts Legacy and the broader Harry Potter franchise remain key assets for the company. They have reiterated that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is "one of the biggest priorities" as they focus on developing fewer, but larger, gaming franchises. The original game has achieved remarkable success, selling over 30 million copies.
