Sydney Sweeney, the star of Madame Web, is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to take on a leading role in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam. This exciting development was confirmed in February when Bandai Namco and Legendary Entertainment announced their collaboration to co-finance the film, which is yet to receive an official title.

The project is set to be helmed by Kim Mickle, the showrunner of Sweet Tooth, who will both write and direct the movie. While specific plot details and a release date remain under wraps, the anticipation was heightened with the release of a teaser poster, signaling the film's global theatrical release.

Variety broke the news about Sweeney's involvement in the Gundam project, though information about her character and the storyline is still undisclosed. Sweeney, recognized for her roles in HBO's Euphoria, The White Lotus, Reality, Anyone but You, and the superhero film Madame Web, continues to expand her portfolio. She was recently attached to star in and produce a film based on a horror story originally shared on a Reddit thread.

Legendary and Bandai Namco have expressed their intention to gradually unveil further details as they are finalized. They highlighted the significance of Mobile Suit Gundam, which first aired in 1979, in establishing the 'real robot anime' genre. The series revolutionized robot anime by moving away from the traditional binary of good versus evil and instead focusing on realistic portrayals of war, detailed scientific analysis, and complex human dramas, treating robots as 'weapons' known as 'mobile suits.' This approach sparked a massive cultural phenomenon.
