Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy's upcoming film, helmed by the acclaimed director of Deadpool & Wolverine, is still in the works. The film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, recently shared an encouraging update with Screen Rant, expressing his excitement and hinting that the project might be progressing faster than anticipated. "I am [excited] too," Tropper stated. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
Details about the movie remain largely under wraps, but it's confirmed to be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shed light on its timeline in a February interview with Deadline, explaining, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she elaborated. Another key detail is the involvement of Ryan Gosling, who is reportedly set to star in the film.
While Tropper's update is a promising sign, fans will need to exercise patience as the film isn't expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, or possibly 2027.
Disney has been cautious with its Star Wars releases since the mixed reception to Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. The studio has canceled several projects, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled plans for three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has experienced several changes, including the recent departure of screenwriter Steven Knight, who took over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars projects, with recent reports indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming films.
Disney's Star Wars lineup extends beyond these films. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy, distinct from the Skywalker Saga. Fans can look forward to the next Star Wars content with the premiere of Season 2 of Andor on Disney+, set for April 22, featuring a triple premiere episode to kick things off.
