Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 could be hitting the shelves by the end of 2025. Alongside this, there are whispers of a next-gen upgrade for the game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. According to GameReactor, insiders "close to Rockstar" suggest that not only is a Switch 2 version of this beloved Wild West adventure in the works, but a "next-gen upgrade patch" is also being prepared to enhance gameplay on current-gen consoles.
While the specifics remain under wraps, GameReactor's sources hint that both the port and the upgrade could be available as soon as later this year. This aligns with similar reports from Nintenduo, which claims the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is slated for release within Take-Two's current financial year, ending March 31, 2026. It's uncertain whether this port will be a digital-only release or if physical copies will also be available.
Red Dead Redemption 2 was hailed as a "masterpiece" when it launched in 2018, earning a perfect 10/10 score from IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review, which praised it as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era." Given this acclaim, the prospect of Red Dead Redemption 2 making its way to the Switch 2 might not be too surprising. In a recent Q&A with investors following Take-Two's latest financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" about Nintendo's new platform. He noted that Nintendo's support for third-party publishers has improved significantly compared to previous efforts.
"We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform," Zelnick said. "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."
Take-Two is set to bring Civilization 7 on launch day (June 5), along with the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (though specific titles and release dates are unclear), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. These titles are not surprising, as Take-Two already publishes these franchises on the Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door is open for other releases, particularly from Take-Two's back catalog. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, classics like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 could find their way to the Switch 2.
