Star Wars fans are eagerly anticipating the expansion of the universe beyond The Rise of Skywalker, and while Shawn Levy's upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter remains a much-anticipated project, a new young adult novel titled Star Wars: The Last Order will soon give fans a deeper look into the aftermath of the 2019 film. Revealed by publisher Penguin Random House, the novel will delve into the lives of beloved characters Finn, played by John Boyega, and Jannah, portrayed by Naomi Ackie, both introduced in Rise of Skywalker. Written by Kwame Mbalia, the book's official synopsis promises an engaging narrative:
“Following the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance rescues a ship full of young passengers who had been kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah set out to find the First Order officer responsible before he can endanger any more children, the two former stormtroopers must wrestle with their own complicated pasts as soldiers of the oppressive regime.”
This novel marks the first exploration of the Star Wars universe post-Rise of Skywalker, although it's not the first project planned to do so. Shawn Levy's film, while still on the horizon, promises to expand the timeline further. In an interview with Deadline, Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy shared insights on the project, stating, “It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out.” Additionally, writer Jonathan Tropper expressed his excitement about the film to Screen Rant, saying, "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." The film, which will feature Ryan Gosling, is set to be released on May 28, 2027, as announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan.
