Nintendo's updated Content Guidelines crack down on creators, threatening bans for violations. This September 2nd update expands enforcement beyond DMCA takedowns, allowing Nintendo to proactively remove content and restrict creators from sharing future Nintendo-related material. Previously, only "unlawful, infringing, or inappropriate" content was targeted. Now, violations could lead to permanent bans.
The updated guidelines clarify prohibited content, adding two key examples: actions disrupting multiplayer gameplay and graphic/offensive content, including insulting or disturbing statements or actions.
This stricter approach follows reported takedowns, possibly spurred by an incident involving Splatoon 3 content creator Liora Channel. Their video, featuring interviews about dating within the game, was removed by Nintendo, leading Liora Channel to publicly commit to avoiding sexually suggestive Nintendo-related content.
The stricter rules aim to address the potential for predatory behavior in online games, particularly impacting younger players. Examples like those reported in Roblox, where individuals have been arrested for exploiting connections made within the game, highlight the need for proactive measures. Nintendo's move underscores the responsibility of content creators to protect the safety and well-being of young gamers.
