It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 continues this tradition in an unexpected way. During today's Nintendo Direct, we were introduced to a new addition to the Hyrule Warriors series: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, set to launch this winter.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment brings back the action-packed gameplay of the Hyrule Warriors series, this time focusing on the characters from the ancient history of Tears of the Kingdom. The game features familiar faces like Zelda, alongside Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. It delves into Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she allies with the last Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle against Ganondorf and his forces.

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda wielding powerful magic, Rauru with his distinctive sword-spear, and brief glimpses of other Sacred Stone wielders in action.
This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was particularly notable for its storytelling, which, while connected to Breath of the Wild, took a slightly unexpected turn. We awarded Age of Calamity a 9/10, praising it as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
