Nintendo has revealed the first detailed look at the Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just weeks before the console's debut next month.
A new video on the Nintendo Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carrying case, featuring slots to securely store up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges.
As expected, Switch 2 cartridges match the size and shape of Switch 1 cartridges, allowing the Switch 2 to use a single slot for games from both console generations. The key difference lies in the color: Switch 2 cartridges are red.
The red color appears to be standard across all Switch 2 cartridges, as seen with the Mario Kart World cartridge in Nintendo’s video. (If you don’t have the Nintendo Today app, check the video via OatmealDome on X below.)
The cartridge’s top sticker also features a Switch 2 logo, distinct from the Nintendo Switch logo on original cartridges.

Here's a look inside the official Switch 2 carrying case. It has room for the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Aside from the color and logo, Switch 2 cartridges are nearly identical to their predecessors, including the bitter coating Nintendo uses to deter users from putting them in their mouths.
“We want to ensure no one risks unintended ingestion,” Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta told GameSpot. “The coating makes you spit it out if it enters your mouth.”
The Switch 2 is slated to launch on June 5, 2025, just three weeks away. A recent report indicated that Nintendo’s key partner, Samsung, is already exploring a Switch 2 hardware refresh with an upgraded OLED screen.
