At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 on January 7th, PlayStation Productions announced several major game adaptations. First up: Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new anime series produced by Crunchyroll and Aniplex, set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. Takanobu Mizumo will direct, with Gen Urobuchi handling story composition, and Sony Music partnering on the soundtrack.

Next, Asad Qizilbash (Head of PlayStation Productions) and Ashley Brucks (President of Screen Gems) revealed upcoming film adaptations of Horizon Zero Dawn (produced by Sony Pictures) and Helldivers 2 (handled by Columbia Pictures). Details on these films remain scarce for now. They followed this announcement with a teaser for an Until Dawn film, slated for release on April 25, 2025.

Finally, Neil Druckmann took the stage, briefly discussing Naughty Dog's upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, before unveiling a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, adapting elements from The Last of Us Part II and introducing characters like Abby and Dina.

With numerous projects underway, PlayStation Productions is clearly expanding its reach into film and television. The success of these adaptations could pave the way for even more PlayStation franchises to cross over into other media.

Previously Released PlayStation Productions Adaptations

This isn't PlayStation's first foray into video game adaptations. Early examples include the Resident Evil film series (starting in 2002) and the 2006 Silent Hill film. While reception among fans was mixed, both were box office successes.

PlayStation Productions, established in 2019, aims to adapt PlayStation-exclusive games. Its first major success was the 2022 Uncharted film starring Tom Holland, followed by the 2023 Gran Turismo film—both achieving box office success.

In 2023, PlayStation Productions also released the Twisted Metal series on Peacock. Though less critically acclaimed than The Last of Us, the post-apocalyptic action-comedy completed production on its second season in late 2024, with a release date yet to be announced.

Beyond the CES announcements, PlayStation Productions is also developing films based on Days Gone and a sequel to the Uncharted film, as well as a God of War television series, though details remain limited.

Given PlayStation Productions' current trajectory, it's highly likely that more popular PlayStation franchises will receive adaptations in the future, driven by fan demand and market potential.
