George R. R. Martin, the acclaimed author behind the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series and the visionary behind the world of FromSoftware's blockbuster game Elden Ring, has teased the possibility of an Elden Ring movie. However, he's also hinted at a significant obstacle to his deeper involvement in such a project: his ongoing commitment to finishing "The Winds of Winter," the long-awaited sixth book in his fantasy series.
During IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin shared with IGN that while he couldn't divulge too much, there is indeed talk about adapting Elden Ring into a movie. This isn't the first time he's hinted at such a project, and FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has previously expressed openness to an adaptation, provided they find a "very strong partner" to collaborate with.
Speaking to IGN, Martin acknowledged that his involvement in any Elden Ring movie might be limited due to his focus on "The Winds of Winter," which he's been working on for over a decade. Fans eagerly awaiting this next installment in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series have been met with repeated delays, and Martin himself has expressed frustration over the prolonged timeline, stating, "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late."
Despite the delays, Martin remains committed to finishing "The Winds of Winter," emphasizing that it's still a priority, even as some speculate it may never see completion. This dedication to his literary work could impact his potential involvement in an Elden Ring movie, as he noted, "I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
Martin's contribution to Elden Ring was significant in terms of worldbuilding. He explained to IGN how he worked with FromSoftware to develop the game's backstory, crafting a rich history spanning thousands of years before the game's present-day action. This collaboration involved multiple sessions where Martin's ideas on magic, runes, and the world's history were brought to life by FromSoftware's creative team.
When asked if all his written material was used in the game, Martin confirmed that, as with any epic fantasy, there's always more to the world than what appears on screen. This suggests there could be additional content from his worldbuilding that might be utilized in future projects, including a potential movie adaptation.
