Firaxis Games has unveiled a virtual reality adaptation of the recently launched Civilization VII.

Sid Meier's Civilization VII - VR, marking the franchise's first venture into VR, is slated for a Spring 2025 release, exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets.

Developed by PlaySide Studios (known for VR titles like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Meta Horizon Worlds), the game, published by 2K Games, offers a unique VR experience.

Official Description:

Civilization VII - VR immerses players in the Civilization world like never before. The game world unfolds on a Command Table, allowing players to zoom in for intricate details or zoom out for a strategic overview, mimicking a dynamic tabletop experience. Players interact directly with historical leaders, forging alliances or waging war across the ages.

Offering both immersive VR and mixed reality modes (seamlessly switchable), VR transports players to a personalized museum overlooking their leader's domain, while mixed reality integrates the Command Table into the player's physical space. A dedicated Archives room displays gameplay achievements as detailed dioramas in both VR and mixed reality. Online multiplayer supports up to four players on Meta Quest 3 and 3S.

The PC and console versions of Civilization VII, currently available through early access, have received mixed reception from players, with criticism focusing on the user interface, limited map variety, and missing features.

Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback, promising improvements including UI enhancements, cooperative team play in multiplayer, and a broader range of map types.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, acknowledged the negative reviews but expressed confidence in the game's long-term appeal to the core Civilization fanbase, describing its early performance as "very encouraging."
