As anticipation builds for Grand Theft Auto 6 following the 2023 debut trailer, a former Rockstar developer argues against releasing additional trailers before the game’s launch.
Rockstar’s GTA 6 Trailer 1 shattered viewership records in December 2023, yet no new content has followed. The prolonged silence has sparked wild fan theories about the timing of GTA 6 Trailer 2.
These theories range from counting holes in Lucia’s cell door net to analyzing bullet holes in the car from Trailer 1 and even vehicle license plates. The most prominent speculation, the GTA 6 moon watch, accurately predicted the announcement date for Trailer 1 but has been disproven as a clue for Trailer 2’s release.
When will GTA 6 Trailer 2 drop? Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick hinted that fans might wait until closer to the game’s fall 2025 release for the next glimpse of the highly anticipated title.
Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar technical director who contributed to the series through Grand Theft Auto 4 in 2008, stated he would skip further trailers if he were in charge.
“I’d hold off on more trailers,” Vermeij posted on X. “The hype for GTA 6 is already massive, and keeping things under wraps will make the launch even more monumental.”
When a user asked if Rockstar might simply announce the GTA 6 release date without additional trailers, Vermeij called it “a bold move.”
Could Rockstar take such a step? Naming the first trailer “GTA 6 Trailer 1” implies more may follow, but plans can shift. The studio might prioritize finalizing the game for its 2025 release over producing another heavily scrutinized trailer.
Vermeij noted that Rockstar delayed GTA 4 in July 2007, just months before its planned October 16 release, and suggested a similar “decision day” looms for GTA 6.
“It wasn’t until then that we realized we’d miss the deadline,” Vermeij said. “I expect a similar moment for GTA 6. Hopefully, Take-Two’s August earnings call sheds light.”
In a March interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick was pressed on why GTA 6’s release date remains closely guarded.
“The excitement for this game is unmatched in entertainment history,” Zelnick said. “I’ve worked across every entertainment sector, and this level of anticipation is unprecedented.
“We aim to sustain that excitement. Unlike competitors who reveal schedules years ahead, we release marketing closer to launch to heighten anticipation while balancing unmet expectations. We don’t always nail it, but that’s the goal.”
Mike York, a former Rockstar New England animator who worked on Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 until 2017, said on his YouTube channel that Rockstar is intentionally fueling fan theories by staying silent on Trailer 2’s release.
“Fans are crafting elaborate theories to predict the next trailer,” York said. “Rockstar’s secrecy is deliberate—it builds intrigue and keeps the community buzzing without them lifting a finger.”
York added that Rockstar is likely resisting fan pressure to announce the Trailer 2 date to maintain this strategy.
“They could easily share the trailer date, but they don’t,” York said. “It’s a deliberate choice. This approach sparks fascinating theories and keeps fans engaged.
“These theories unite the community. It’s a clever way to keep fans talking about the game during quiet periods.”
Zelnick’s comments suggest that GTA 6 Trailer 2, if it exists, may not arrive until closer to the fall 2025 launch, assuming no delays. Fans may face a long wait for another glimpse.
