The acclaimed series Shōgun, which swept up 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is gearing up for an eagerly anticipated second season. Cosmo Jarvis, renowned for his portrayal of pilot John Blackthorn, will not only reprise his role but also step into the shoes of a co-executive producer, as confirmed by an official press release from FX.
In addition to Jarvis, lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who committed to Season 2 last May after the show's renewal, has been elevated to the role of executive producer, following his contributions to the original run. Production for the new season is slated to kick off in January 2026, with filming returning to Vancouver, the location of the first season.
FX has described the upcoming second season as "a wholly original new chapter to the first season," which was based on James Clavell’s novel. The network elaborated on the storyline connection between the two seasons:"In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) battled for his survival as his adversaries in the Council of Regents banded together against him. The arrival of a mysterious European ship, stranded in a nearby village, introduced its English pilot, John Blackthorne (Jarvis), who shared crucial strategic insights with Toranaga. This alliance shifted the balance of power, enabling Toranaga to triumph in a pivotal civil war.
"Season two, set a decade later, continues the historically-inspired narrative, delving deeper into the intertwined destinies of these two men from vastly different worlds."
With any luck, fans can expect to see new episodes of this exceptional series by the end of 2026. Until then, anticipation builds as we await further updates.
