Lizzy Caplan reveals Channing Tatum's abandoned Gambit film would have blended 1930s screwball comedy romance with superhero action - a concept the Cloverfield star calls "a really cool idea" in her Business Insider interview about the scrapped project.

Caplan confirms she was officially attached to play the female lead opposite Tatum back in 2017, having even held preparatory meetings before filming was slated to begin. "We got pretty far along in production," she explained. "There was already a tentative shooting schedule in place."
Producer Simon Kinberg had previously teased the film's unconventional approach in a 2018 IGN interview, describing how Gambit's roguish charm would shape the project. "He's this smooth-talking con man with irresistible charm," Kinberg noted. "That personality just screamed romantic comedy to us."
Caplan's recent comments validate this vision: "The team wanted to capture that fast-talking, zany energy of classic 1930s romantic comedies, just set within the X-Men universe. It could have been something truly special."
While Tatum's brief Gambit appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine delighted fans, Marvel Studios remains tight-lipped about future plans for the character - despite confirming the X-Men's eventual MCU integration.
The actor's emotional journey with the character became public knowledge after he admitted struggling when Disney shelved the Fox-developed solo film post-merger. "That experience left me psychologically bruised," Tatum has said about the years-long development process that ultimately collapsed.
Excitement reached fever pitch among Gambit enthusiasts last August when Ryan Reynolds shared a high-resolution version of a particularly blurry Deadpool & Wolverine theater moment - sending message boards into speculative chaos about possible hidden appearances.
