Blade Trilogy Writer on MCU Reboot Delay: 'Why So Long?'

The writer of the Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his willingness to step in and help revitalize Mahershala Ali's stalled Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reboot of Blade. Despite being announced in 2019, the project has faced numerous setbacks and has been removed from Marvel's release schedule, with no new date confirmed.

Recent developments have highlighted the challenges facing the film. Last month, artist and DJ Flying Lotus revealed on X/Twitter that he was set to compose the music for Blade before the project fell apart. He expressed doubts about its revival but noted it would have been a fun endeavor. Similarly, costume designer Ruth E. Carter, known for her work on Sinners, confirmed on The John Campea Show that she was initially involved in designing costumes for a 1920s-set Blade, a setting that promised intriguing visual aesthetics.

Actor Delroy Lindo, who was attached to star alongside Ali, shared his disappointment with Entertainment Weekly, recounting how initial excitement and inclusivity in the project's development eventually gave way to frustration as it derailed.

Amidst these setbacks, Goyer, who wrote and directed entries in the original Blade trilogy, told ScreenRant he would be keen to help with the reboot, expressing confusion over the delays as a Marvel fan himself. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios' chief, reaffirmed the studio's commitment to the project in an interview with Omelete in November 2024, emphasizing their dedication to bringing Blade to the MCU.

In related news, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, which included a cameo by Wesley Snipes as Blade, was a major success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, praised Snipes' original Blade films for paving the way for the superhero genre and called for a send-off film for Snipes' character similar to Hugh Jackman's Logan. Reynolds also highlighted ongoing efforts to develop a new Deadpool and X-Men movie, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters.
