President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on films produced outside the United States, labeling foreign production a "national security threat." The policy was unveiled in a Sunday social media post.

"America's film industry is collapsing rapidly," Trump stated. "Foreign nations lure our filmmakers and studios abroad with financial incentives, devastating Hollywood and other U.S. regions. This coordinated effort by other countries constitutes a security threat—it's messaging and propaganda! Effective immediately, I'm directing the Commerce Department and U.S. Trade Representative to implement a 100% tariff on all foreign-produced films. AMERICAN MOVIES MUST BE MADE IN AMERICA!"

The practical implications remain uncertain, including how the tariff would be enforced and which productions would be targeted. Many countries currently offer tax incentives that attract international filmmakers to locations like the UK, Australia, and Europe.

The policy could also disrupt films requiring authentic international settings—from globe-trotting franchises like James Bond and Mission: Impossible to sports films like the upcoming F1 movie, shot at racetracks outside U.S. borders.

Questions remain about impacts on in-progress films, the exclusion of television productions, and potential retaliatory measures against U.S. films screened globally.
