An unexpected cinematic venture is on the horizon: a live-action Toys "R" Us movie is in development.
Per Variety, Story Kitchen — known for spearheading recent video game film adaptations, including the Sonic the Hedgehog series — aims to "evoke childhood magic in a dynamic, contemporary adventure that celebrates the Toys 'R' Us brand’s 70-year legacy in the toy world."
“Toys 'R' Us remains a cultural icon, sparking joy in kids and adults alike,” said Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg. “As '80s kids who saw Toys 'R' Us as a wonderland, we’re thrilled to collaborate on a film that embodies the adventure, creativity, and nostalgia of the brand.”
The film draws inspiration from Night at the Museum, Back to the Future, and Big, alongside toy-centric franchises like Barbie. While casting details remain under wraps, Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval will produce for Story Kitchen, joined by Kim Miller Olko of Toys "R" Us Studios.
“As the debut film for Toys "R" Us, this project offers a unique chance to bring our brand’s magic to theaters,” said Miller Olko, president of Toys "R" Us Studios. “It will be a vibrant journey, capturing the limitless wonder and joy that define Toys "R" Us, inspiring audiences of all ages.”
Last year, Story Kitchen revealed a film adaptation of Square Enix's Just Cause, directed by Blue Beetle’s Ángel Manuel Soto. The studio is also working on Dredge: The Movie, Kingmakers, and Sleeping Dogs.
