Scarlett Johansson criticizes Oscars for snubbing 'Avengers: Endgame'

Actress Scarlett Johansson has two Academy Award nominations under her belt, but she still can't comprehend why Avengers: Endgame - where she portrayed Black Widow - received only a single nomination for visual effects.

"How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?" Johansson questioned regarding the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster during a recent Vanity Fair interview. "It was an ambitious film that defied expectations, working remarkably well cinematically while becoming one of history's highest-grossing movies."

While Avengers: Endgame stands as one of the MCU's finest achievements, the Academy has historically overlooked superhero films for major categories like acting and directing. To date, only 2018's Black Panther has earned Marvel Studios a Best Picture nomination. Johansson's decade-long portrayal of Natasha Romanoff, from her debut in 2010's Iron Man to her emotional conclusion in Endgame, certainly warranted recognition.

The actress revealed to Vanity Fair she likely won't revisit the MCU. "I struggle to envision any scenario where returning would feel meaningful for me or authentic to Natasha's journey," she explained.

"I cherish my relationships with the cast and crew, but Natasha's story reached its perfect conclusion. I wouldn't want to compromise that - both creatively and for the fans who've invested in her arc."

Following Black Widow's sacrificial death in Endgame, Johansson reprised her role one final time in 2021's Black Widow prequel film, serving as both star and executive producer.
