Sadie Sink, known for her role as Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, is reportedly joining Tom Holland in Spider-Man 4.
According to Deadline, Sink, who debuted in the 2016 biographical sports drama Chuck, will feature in the upcoming MCU film, set to begin production later this year with a release date of July 31, 2026.
Marvel and Sony declined to comment when approached by Deadline.
Deadline suggests Sink might play the X-Men’s Jean Grey or another iconic redheaded Spider-Man character, possibly Mary Jane Watson. How this fits with Peter Parker’s ongoing relationship with Michelle "MJ" Jones-Watson, portrayed by Zendaya in prior Spider-Man films, is unclear. Deadline indicates Sink’s role in Spider-Man 4 will be significant, potentially marking a fresh start following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter reintroduces himself to MJ after Doctor Strange wipes his identity from memory.
Holland is currently working on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and is expected to begin filming Spider-Man 4 once that project wraps, per Deadline.
Last year, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige hinted at X-Men characters appearing in upcoming MCU films.
At the Disney APAC Content Showcase in Singapore, Feige told audiences that “some X-Men players you might recognize” would appear in the next few MCU projects, though he didn’t specify which characters or films.
On integrating the X-Men into the MCU, Feige said: “You’ll see this continue in our next few movies with familiar X-Men characters.”
“After that, the story of Secret Wars paves the way for a new era of mutants and the X-Men. It’s a dream come true. We finally have the X-Men back.”
At the time, Marvel’s next three films were Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set for July 2025, marking the start of Phase Six.
Mutant appearances are more likely in Phase 6 films, including 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man 4, as well as 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Fans are also curious if Deadpool and Wolverine will return to the MCU after their successful standalone film this summer, and whether Channing Tatum might reprise his role as Gambit.
Feige emphasized the X-Men’s pivotal role in the MCU’s future post-Secret Wars. “When we prepared for Avengers: Endgame, we focused on reaching that grand finale, then starting anew,” Feige explained. “Now, on the path to Secret Wars, we have a clear vision of the story through and beyond it. The X-Men are central to that future.”
Phase 7 of the MCU seems poised to focus heavily on the X-Men, but in the near term, Storm debuted in What If...? Season 3, marking her first appearance in the broader MCU.
In October, Marvel Studios announced three untitled films for 2028: February 18, May 5, and November 10. One of these is increasingly likely to be an X-Men project.
