Few things are as satisfying in an action RPG as perfectly parrying an enemy attack, turning their aggression into an opportunity for a devastating counter. If you're aiming for that masterful *Avowed* experience, here's how to master the parry.
Parrying in Avowed isn't a starting ability; you'll need to unlock it. Navigate to the Abilities menu, then select the Ranger tab. You'll find Parry in the top middle column. To unlock it, invest an Ability point into any of the three core skill trees. Once that's done, Parry is yours.
Parry has three ranks:
Rank | Player Level Requirement | Level Description |
1 | N/A (1 Point Spent) | Unlocks Parry. |
2 | Player Level 5 | Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, increasing enemy stun on a successful parry. |
3 | Player Level 8 | Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, increasing enemy stun on a successful parry. |
At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," allowing you to parry projectiles.
Successful parrying requires precise timing—blocking just before an enemy attack connects. You'll hear a metallic clang and see a visual cue as the enemy stumbles. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's significantly easier than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle must be dodged. Similarly, only certain weapons can parry: single-handed and two-handed weapons (not in your off-hand), and shields (in your off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.
Parrying stuns attackers, creating openings for significant damage. It's a defensive maneuver that enhances offensive capabilities.
However, its effectiveness depends on your build. Melee characters benefit most, while ranged builds might find it less useful. Fortunately, respeccing in Avowed is easy, allowing you to adjust your abilities as needed.
