The game is set in an alternate future that diverges from our reality starting in the late '80s. According to the narrative, a new religion emerges in the *Intergalactic* universe and eventually becomes the dominant force. Naughty Dog dedicated several years to meticulously crafting its lore, from the inception with its first prophet to its subsequent transformations and distortions.

This new religion originates and spreads across a single planet, which over time becomes completely isolated from the rest of the galaxy. The protagonist of the game crash-lands on this very planet, finding herself in a desolate place where she is completely alone. Survival in this isolation becomes one of the central themes of the project. Druckmann highlighted that, unlike previous Naughty Dog games which often included a companion for the player to interact with, in *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*, players will have to navigate and solve challenges on their own if they hope to escape the planet.
